Law enforcement authorities have notified Oleksandr Shevchuk, the current Deputy Mayor of Zhytomyr, that he is suspected of illicit enrichment. According to the investigation, during martial law, the official acquired assets worth over 9.3 million hryvnias more than his official income. The court has already imposed a preventive measure on the suspect in the form of remand in custody, subject to bail.
According to the investigation, between 2021 and 2025, the official purchased a plot of land on which he built a private house with an area of almost 200 square metres, and also bought a Volkswagen Touareg.
To avoid declaring these valuable assets in his annual declarations, the official resorted to subterfuge. He officially divorced his wife, but they continued to live together and share a household. Subsequently, the deputy mayor registered the new plot of land and the newly built house in the name of his former ‘nominal’ wife.
An expert assessment confirmed that the total value of the purchased assets significantly exceeds the official’s family’s legal earnings. Oleksandr Shevchuk has now been formally charged under the article on illegal enrichment (Part 1 of Article 368-5 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The court has ordered that the suspect be remanded in custody, with the alternative of bail set at 832 thousand hryvnias.
The investigation is ongoing. If the official is found guilty in court, he faces a prison sentence of between five and ten years, along with a ban on holding certain positions or engaging in certain activities for up to three years.
