Party history
The Opposition Bloc was created by uniting six political parties (the Development Party of Ukraine, the Center Party, the New Policy Party, the State Neutrality Party, the Ukraine-Forward Party, and the Trudova Ukraina Party) to participate in the early elections to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Initially, it was expected that the Party of Regions would join the list, but the Party of Regions refused to participate in the campaign. From 2014 to 2016, it also included the All-Ukrainian Union Center (headed by Vadym Rabinovych).
On September 9, 2014, a roundtable discussion “Peace. Stability. Revival” was held in Kyiv with more than 50 participants: representatives of political parties, public and trade union organizations.
On September 12, 2014, the leader of the Strong Ukraine party, Serhiy Tihipko, said that the Opposition Bloc had offered cooperation in the parliamentary elections. But the politician refused.
On September 14, 2014, a forum under the slogan “Peace. Stability. Revival”, which was attended by the six political parties listed above. The participants of the forum adopted a program platform stating that the Opposition Bloc stands for neutrality and preservation of Ukraine’s non-aligned status, and a resolution demanding that the President make peace and stop the bloodshed, resign the government, disband and ban illegal armed groups, and bring to justice those responsible for shelling settlements in the east of the country. On September 15, a technical congress of the Opposition Bloc was held, which approved the electoral list.
On September 21, 2014, it became known that the Opposition Bloc party was headed by the former Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Yuriy Boyko.
In 2018, the party split. The faction consists of two large groups. One part is oriented towards oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, the other towards oligarch Dmytro Firtash and former head of the Presidential Administration Serhiy Lovochkin. On November 20, 2018, Yuriy Boyko and Serhiy Lovochkin were expelled from the Opposition Bloc faction. Vadym Novynskyi became the new head of the faction.
In 2018, the party split. The faction consists of two large groups. One part is focused on oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, the other on oligarch Dmytro Firtash and former Presidential Administration head Serhiy Lovochkin. On November 20, 2018, Yuriy Boyko and Serhiy Lovochkin were expelled from the Opposition Bloc faction. Vadym Novynskyi became the new head of the faction.

After losing electoral support following the Revolution of Dignity in 2014, the Party of Regions collapsed and its former leaders created several short-lived parties that later reorganized into the Opposition Bloc. The media accuse the Opposition Bloc of receiving funding from fictitious companies in 2016-2017. The main sponsors of the Opposition Bloc among Ukrainian oligarchs are Viktor Medvedchuk, Dmytro Firtash and Rinat Akhmetov.
