People’s Deputy Oleksiy Goncharenko has claimed that Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) is preparing to serve a notice of suspicion to Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, suggesting this was the real motive behind her recent resignation «due to family circumstances.» However, the lawmaker’s timeline contradicts the history of official investigations involving the diplomat and highlights a potential shift in the MP’s own political focus.
The narrative that recent pressure from anti-corruption authorities triggered Stefanishyna’s resignation raises questions among analysts. By the time she was appointed Ambassador to the US, she was already a defendant in a criminal case involving the alleged embezzlement of budget funds allocated for European integration. This case was already being tried in the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC).
Furthermore, NABU has been parallelly investigating two other episodes involving Stefanishyna:
Long-standing omissions or false statements in her electronic asset declarations.
Alleged assistance in transferring high-value seized assets managed by ARMA (including the Trade Unions Building on Khreshchatyk Street) to her ex-husband while she headed the Ministry of Justice.
Consequently, the existence of these ongoing criminal proceedings did not initially prevent her high-level diplomatic appointment.
According to previously leaked audio recordings, a key role in lobbying for Stefanishyna’s ambassadorial appointment was played by Tymur Mindich, a business partner of Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Over the past year of Stefanishyna’s tenure in Washington, the legal status of her cases remained unchanged. However, Mindich’s own situation deteriorated significantly: he became a target of criminal investigations, lost his political leverage, and subsequently left Ukraine.
Background Context: Prior to May 25, MP Oleksiy Goncharenko was a vocal critic of what he termed «Mindich’s organized crime group» and regularly convened meetings of a parliamentary investigative commission on the matter.
Following that date, however, the lawmaker completely halted all public mentions of the businessman and suspended the commission’s activities. Goncharenko’s current remarks regarding Stefanishyna’s resignation effectively divert public attention away from Mindich’s initial role in her appointment. This sudden shift has led political observers to speculate about potential behind-the-scenes arrangements between the opposition MP and the Office of the President.
