Pechersk District Court of Kyiv has set bail at 10 million UAH for Vitalii Hersak, former head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Mykolaiv Oblast. Law enforcement authorities suspect the former official of illicit enrichment totaling over 22.6 million UAH during his tenure in 2020–2021.
According to the investigation and lifestyle monitoring conducted by the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP), the official’s mother-in-law purchased several luxury real estate properties in Kyiv in July 2021. The acquisitions included two apartments worth over 12 million UAH, commercial space valued at 8.4 million UAH, and three parking spaces for 1.9 million UAH.
She subsequently gifted the properties to her daughter—Hersak’s wife—who granted her husband full operational rights over the assets. Official verification confirmed that the combined family income could not account for such high-value purchases.
«As someone with 20 years of operational experience, this entire case appears baseless. It relies on questionable setups, while my relatives have had the financial means to acquire assets throughout their lives,» stated Vitalii Hersak during the court hearing, rejecting all allegations.
The former official had previously drawn attention from investigative journalists, who uncovered an undeclared fleet of luxury vehicles and land plots registered under his family’s name. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Hersak from his post in November 2020, though earlier administrative proceedings regarding false asset declarations were dismissed by the courts.
The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and the Prosecutor General’s Office have officially charged the former SBU official under Article 368-5 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (illicit enrichment). The pre-trial investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement continues identifying potential co-conspirators.
